About this artwork

The Andromeda Galaxy stretches diagonally across the frame, tilted much as it appears from Earth. Its centre is a warm, glowing oval of gold, wrapped in rings of cream, smoky brown and blue, and the outer arms dissolve into a fine dust of stars that trails off towards the bottom left corner.

Around it the sky is a velvety blue-black, peppered with pinpoint stars. Cloud gathers in two corners only — teal and gold at the top left, soft rose flecked with gold at the bottom right — leaving plenty of open space so the galaxy can breathe. This Andromeda galaxy print captures a real neighbour of our own Milky Way and has a contemplative feel: a reminder that the light we see from it set out long before modern humans walked the Earth.

About the Andromeda Galaxy

The Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, is the nearest large spiral galaxy to the Milky Way, about 2.5 million light-years away. Under dark skies it is visible to the naked eye as a faint, elongated smudge, making it one of the most distant objects you can see without a telescope. In the 1920s Edwin Hubble measured its distance and showed that it lies far beyond our own galaxy, settling a long debate about whether other galaxies existed. Andromeda is gradually drawing closer to the Milky Way.

How to style it

A thoughtful piece for a study, library or living room with deep blue or charcoal walls; pair it with the Milky Way design to hang our galaxy and its nearest large neighbour side by side. Explore the full Celestial Wall Art collection.

Questions & answers

Can you see the Andromeda Galaxy without a telescope?

Yes, from a dark site. On a clear, moonless autumn night in the Northern Hemisphere it appears as a faint, fuzzy oval in the constellation Andromeda. Binoculars show it more clearly, though never with the colour in this artwork.

How far away is the Andromeda Galaxy?

About 2.5 million light-years. That means the light reaching us tonight left Andromeda roughly 2.5 million years ago, so we see the galaxy as it looked then rather than as it is now.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
