About this artwork
A copper-red moon hangs just above centre, its surface mottled with darker maria and lighter highlands in shades of rust, ember and burnt orange. It is the colour of a total lunar eclipse, when the Moon slips into Earth's shadow and glows rather than vanishing.
The sky around it is deep navy with a faint stream of Milky Way at the top right and a smudge of crimson nebula drifting in from the upper left, echoing the moon's warmth. Below, clouds bank up in gold-leaf texture, soft pink and a cool sweep of teal that keeps the palette from becoming too heavy. This blood moon wall art has more intensity than the gold moons in the collection; it suits rooms with darker walls, warm woods or leather, and anyone drawn to the theatrical side of the night sky.
Why the Blood Moon Turns Red
A blood moon is the Moon during a total lunar eclipse, when Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon. Rather than disappearing, the Moon turns red or copper. Sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere is bent towards the Moon, and the atmosphere scatters away most of the blue light — the same effect that reddens sunsets. In effect, the Moon is lit by every sunrise and sunset on Earth at once. Lunar eclipses can only happen at full moon.
How to style it
Best in a living room, library or study with deep, warm colours — terracotta, oxblood, walnut — and striking alongside the solar eclipse design as an eclipse pair. Explore the full Celestial Wall Art collection.

Questions & answers
Is it safe to look at a blood moon?
Yes. A total lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope, because you are only seeing dim, reflected light. Only solar eclipses require special eye protection.
Why is it called a blood moon?
It is a popular name, not a scientific term, for the deep red or coppery colour the Moon takes on during a total lunar eclipse. The exact shade varies from eclipse to eclipse, depending on how much dust and cloud is in Earth's atmosphere.
Is a frame included?
Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.
Which size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.
How is my print made and shipped?
Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
