Seen head-on and perfectly centred, the Brandenburg Gate spans the full width of the frame. Its Doric columns glow deep amber, the quadriga stands dark against the night on top, and through the middle passage the slim Fernsehturm rises with its lit sphere, a neat meeting of old and modern Berlin.

The sky is a heavy, textured blue, brushed rather than smooth, and a single street lamp shines between the right-hand columns. Most of the lower half belongs to the wet square in front, where the gate's warm light runs down in long streaks of gold, rose and violet. Berlin After Dark

The Brandenburg Gate stands on Pariser Platz at the head of Unter den Linden, and it is floodlit every night. Each October the Festival of Lights projects artwork onto the gate and other landmarks, and on New Year's Eve the boulevard running west from it hosts one of Germany's biggest open-air parties.
