About this artwork
A spiral galaxy turns at the centre of the frame, seen face-on so its full shape unfurls. The core is a bright knot of gold, and from it the arms whirl outward in loose, energetic strokes of cobalt, powder blue, rose and smoky grey. The sense of motion is almost dizzying, like water spiralling down a drain or a storm seen from above.
The background here is darker than elsewhere in the collection — close to black — which makes the arms and the scattered white and gold stars stand out sharply. Two corners are framed by heavy cloud in gold-leaf texture and teal, top left and bottom right, creating a diagonal tension around the swirl. About Spiral Galaxies
Spiral galaxies are flat, rotating discs of stars, gas and dust with arms winding out from a central bulge. The bulge is crowded with older, yellowish stars, while the arms glow blue with young, hot stars forming in dense clouds of gas — the same contrast of gold and blue this design celebrates. Edwin Hubble sorted galaxies by shape in the 1920s, and spirals remain among the most familiar large galaxies. Our own Milky Way is a barred spiral.

Questions & answers
Is this a specific real galaxy?
No, it is an imagined spiral galaxy rather than a portrait of one particular object. Its face-on view recalls well-known galaxies such as the Whirlpool and the Pinwheel, interpreted with a gold core and painterly blue and rose arms.
Why are galaxy cores gold and arms blue?
Galaxy centres are dominated by older stars that shine yellow or orange, while the spiral arms host many young, hot, blue stars. In real photographs the contrast is subtler, and this artwork heightens it with gold and jewel tones.
Is a frame included?

Which size should I choose?
