About this artwork

The Gothic façade of Milan's cathedral fills almost the whole width of this print, a lacework of pointed arches, tall windows and statues in pale marble. Gilded highlights pick out every pinnacle as the sun burns behind the spires on the upper right. The sky is a vivid mix of hot pink, peach and turquoise, with billowing clouds on the left.

Below, the piazza is wet and shining, scattering reflections of gold, magenta and teal across the paving stones. A lone lamppost stands on the left, and the edges of neighbouring buildings fall into soft shade. Five doorways line the base of the façade. This Milan wall art feels elegant and celebratory at once. At the bottom, Milan appears in a fine serif with Italy in spaced capitals underneath.

About the Duomo di Milano

Milan Cathedral, the Duomo di Milano, was begun in 1386 and took nearly six centuries to complete. Built largely of pinkish-white marble from the Candoglia quarries near Lake Maggiore, it is one of the largest churches in the world and is famous for its spires and thousands of statues. The façade was completed in the early 19th century at Napoleon's order. On the highest spire stands the Madonnina, a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary, and visitors can walk among the pinnacles on the rooftop terraces.

Questions & answers

How long did it take to build the Milan Duomo?

Nearly six centuries. Construction began in 1386, the façade was finished in the early 19th century under Napoleon, and the last details followed in the 20th century, which explains its rich mix of Gothic and later decoration.

Does the Milan print work in a light, neutral room?

Yes. The pale marble façade keeps the composition airy, and its pink, peach and turquoise sky adds colour without heaviness, so it sits comfortably against white, cream or blush walls.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
