About this artwork
The sun is going down behind the far side of Plaza Mayor, and the whole square responds. On the right, the Casa de la Panadería glows gold, its painted façade and rows of balconies lit warmly, with two slender slate spires topped by finials. The surrounding buildings are a deep brick red, trimmed with green balconies above a continuous run of stone arcades.
Left of centre, the bronze equestrian statue of Philip III stands on its pedestal, rendered in green patina and casting a long diagonal shadow across the cobbles towards the viewer. The paving itself is splashed with pink, gold and turquoise. A pink sky and soft mist under the arches complete the mood. This Madrid wall art is relaxed and sunny, with Madrid in a refined serif and Spain in small capitals at its base.
About Plaza Mayor
Madrid's Plaza Mayor was completed in 1619 under King Philip III, to designs by the architect Juan Gómez de Mora. Over the centuries the arcaded square hosted markets, bullfights, royal celebrations and public executions. After a major fire in 1790, Juan de Villanueva rebuilt it as the enclosed square seen today. At its centre stands a bronze equestrian statue of Philip III, begun by Giambologna and completed by Pietro Tacca, moved here in 1848. The painted Casa de la Panadería dominates the north side.

Questions & answers
Whose statue stands in the middle of Plaza Mayor?
King Philip III of Spain, under whose reign the square was completed in 1619. The bronze equestrian statue was begun by Giambologna and finished by Pietro Tacca, and in the print it casts a long shadow across the cobbles.
What is the gold-lit building on the right?
The Casa de la Panadería, the former bakers' guild house on the north side of Plaza Mayor. Its painted façade and twin spired towers make it the square's most recognisable building, and here it catches the warm evening light.
Is a frame included?
Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.
Which size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.
How is my print made and shipped?
Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
