About this artwork

A wide stone stairway climbs straight up the centre of this print to the façade of the Ruins of St. Paul's, which glows gold and apricot as late sun shines through its empty windows from behind. Every tier is crowded with carved niches, statues and columns, topped by a small pediment and cross against the turquoise sky.

Strings of red lanterns hang across the scene from both sides, and pastel pink buildings with ornate balconies frame the edges. A tree in vivid red-orange leaf leans in at the top left, and mist pools gently at the top of the steps. Flecks of pink and teal colour the worn stone treads. This Macau wall art blends European stonework with Chinese festive colour, and closes with Macau in a serif italic above China in small capitals.

About the Ruins of St. Paul's

The Ruins of St. Paul's are the surviving stone façade of the Church of Mater Dei, built by the Jesuits in the early 17th century alongside St. Paul's College. A fire in 1835 destroyed the church, leaving only the carved front wall and the broad staircase that leads up to it. The façade mixes European Baroque design with Asian motifs, including Chinese characters and carved flowers. It is part of the Historic Centre of Macao, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

How to style it

Suits a hallway, a study or a living room with warm wood and red or terracotta accents. It pairs nicely with the Hong Kong design for a Pearl River Delta duo. Explore the full Golden Hour Cities collection.

Questions & answers

Why is only the façade of St. Paul's still standing?

Because a fire destroyed the rest of the church in 1835. The carved stone front wall and the grand staircase survived, and today they stand as the Ruins of St. Paul's, Macau's best-known landmark and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Why are there red lanterns in the Macau print?

They add a Chinese festive accent to the European stonework. Red lanterns often decorate Macau's streets during festivals, and here they frame the façade from both sides, warming the composition and reflecting the city's blend of cultures.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
