The sun is sinking right beside Brunelleschi's dome, turning the sky saffron and orange and outlining the cathedral's ribs and lantern against it. To the left a bell tower stands over the rooftops, the hills beyond fade into blue haze, and mist rises from the old city.

Below, Florence settles into evening. Terracotta roofs step down towards the Arno, windows begin to glow, and the river carries their reflections along its length. In the foreground a lamppost stands beside a curving street, its wet surface washed with pink, violet and electric blue, while a building on the right is edged in cool neon. Warm above and moody below, this Florence night print catches the turn from sunset to lamplight. Brunelleschi's dome still rules the Florence skyline, and the classic place to watch it as day turns to night is Piazzale Michelangelo, the terrace on the hillside across the Arno. As the light goes, crowds gather on its steps and lamps come on along the river and the Ponte Vecchio. Afterwards many walk down into the Oltrarno, where Piazza Santo Spirito and the lanes of San Niccolò are known for their evening bars and trattorias.

How to style it
