About this artwork
The carved stone facade stands alone at the top of a broad flight of steps, lit honey-gold against a sky of indigo and violet. The night sky shows through its empty windows, and a few bright stars hang above the cross at its peak.
Strings of red lanterns run down both sides of the stairway, glowing against the dark, while the buildings at the edges of the frame are trimmed with neon in pink, cyan and blue. Mist curls around the balustrades. At the bottom the plaza is wet, and the lights spill across it in bold streaks of colour. History and neon meet in this Macau night print, and its strong symmetry gives it real presence on a wall. 'Macau' is set in an elegant serif across the plaza, with 'China' in small spaced capitals below.
About the Ruins of St. Paul's at Night
The Ruins of St. Paul's are the carved stone facade of a 17th-century church destroyed by fire in 1835, and they sit at the heart of the Historic Centre of Macao, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After dark the facade is floodlit at the top of its broad stairway, and the square below stays lively into the evening. The lanes leading down towards Senado Square are lined with shops selling almond cookies and other local snacks, and are strung with lanterns at festival times.
How to style it
Its stairway draws the eye upward, which suits a hallway, landing or the wall at the end of a corridor. Pair it with Hong Kong from the collection, or with other church facades such as Barcelona and Milan. Explore the full Cities at Night collection.

Questions & answers
Are the lanterns in the Macau print red?
Yes. Strings of red lanterns run down both sides of the stairway, a nod to the Chinese festivals that light up Macau's old streets.
Was the Ruins of St. Paul's a church?
It was. What survives is the stone facade of a 17th-century church, which has stood on its own at the top of the steps since the rest of the building burned in 1835.
Is a frame included?
Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.
Which size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.
How is my print made and shipped?
