The Colosseum's broken outer wall curves across the upper half of the design, its arches filled with orange light as the sun sets directly behind the upper tiers. The sky is a deep saffron streaked with cloud, and a band of mist drifts along the base of the amphitheatre.

Tall, dark cypresses stand like sentinels on both sides of an old cobbled road that leads straight to the arena. A tiny figure near the far end gives the building its true scale. The stones are wet, and in them the sunset breaks into vivid patches of gold, magenta and electric teal, while fragments of ancient masonry sit at the edges. This Rome night print sets nearly two thousand years of stone against a modern, neon-touched palette, dramatic but warm. The city name is lettered in a classic serif across the road, with 'Italy' beneath.

The Colosseum After Dark

Once the day's visitors have gone, the Colosseum is floodlit, its arches glowing from every approach. Via dei Fori Imperiali runs from Piazza Venezia to its walls past the lit ruins of the Imperial Forums, one of Rome's great evening walks. In the warmer months, guided night tours have opened parts of the arena after dark, and the nearby Monti district, with its wine bars and trattorias, is where many visitors end the evening.

How to style it
