About this artwork

Florence spreads across the frame from the riverbank to the hills, a dense patchwork of terracotta roofs and ochre, cream and rose-pink façades. Rising above it all is the great ribbed dome of the cathedral, crowned by its marble lantern, with Giotto's slender bell tower standing just to the left. A low sun burns in the upper left, setting the sky ablaze in tangerine and fuchsia.

Behind the city, the hills fade into magenta haze, and pale mist settles among distant rooftops. In the foreground, the Arno runs in cool turquoise, broken by flecks of gold where the light touches the water. This Florence wall art captures the city as it is often admired from the hills south of the river. The name Florence floats across the water in an elegant serif, Italy beneath it in small capitals.

About the Florence Duomo

Florence Cathedral, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, was begun in 1296 to designs by Arnolfo di Cambio. Its vast dome, engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi and built between 1420 and 1436, remains the largest brick dome ever constructed and a defining achievement of the Renaissance. Beside it rises the campanile begun by Giotto in 1334, clad like the cathedral in white, green and pink marble. The classic sunset view is from Piazzale Michelangelo, on the hills south of the Arno.

How to style it

At home in a dining room or kitchen with warm terracotta, olive and linen tones, or in a classic living room. Together with the Rome and Milan designs, it forms an easy Italian trio. Explore the full Golden Hour Cities collection.

Questions & answers

Where was this view of Florence imagined from?

From across the Arno, looking north over the city. It echoes the famous panorama from Piazzale Michelangelo, where the cathedral dome and Giotto's bell tower rise above the terracotta rooftops at sunset.

Who designed the dome shown in the print?

Filippo Brunelleschi. He engineered the dome of Florence Cathedral, built between 1420 and 1436, and it remains the largest brick dome ever constructed. In the print it is the large terracotta dome topped by a white lantern.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
