About this artwork

The Colosseum's great curved wall rises on the left in tiers of round arches, its travertine glowing honey and apricot. On the right, where the outer ring has fallen away, the low sun blazes through the gaps, filling the arches with light. Tall, dark cypresses stand like sentinels on both sides, and pink clouds float in a turquoise sky.

A cobbled road runs from the bottom edge straight towards the amphitheatre, its worn stones splashed with violet, pink and teal. Fragments of ancient walls and grassy verges line the way, and a soft haze gathers at the base of the arches. This Rome wall art captures the Eternal City in its warmest light. The name Rome appears in an elegant serif over the cobbles, with Italy in small capitals beneath.

About the Colosseum

The Colosseum, or Flavian Amphitheatre, was begun under Emperor Vespasian around AD 70–72 and inaugurated by his son Titus in AD 80. Built of travertine, tuff and brick-faced concrete, it held tens of thousands of spectators for gladiatorial contests, animal hunts and public spectacles. Earthquakes and centuries of stone removal stripped away part of its outer ring, leaving the broken silhouette seen today. It stands just east of the Roman Forum, within the Historic Centre of Rome UNESCO World Heritage Site.

How to style it

Suits a study, a dining room or a living room with warm stone, terracotta and olive tones. It joins the Florence and Milan designs naturally on an Italian gallery wall. Explore the full Golden Hour Cities collection.

Questions & answers

Why is part of the Colosseum missing?

Earthquakes and centuries of stone removal. A strong earthquake in 1349 brought down part of the outer wall, and fallen stone was later reused in other Roman buildings. The print shows that broken edge on the right, with sunlight pouring through.

What are the tall dark trees in the Rome print?

Italian cypresses, a classic feature of Roman and Tuscan landscapes. Their dark, narrow shapes frame the Colosseum on both sides and contrast with the warm, honey-coloured stone.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
