About this artwork

The top of the design curves like the edge of a great sphere, its rim lit with a band of gold and a burst of light at the very top. Across this dome, fine gold lines join bright stars into a web of constellation figures, angular and delicate, much as they appear on antique celestial charts.

Below the dome, the Milky Way runs diagonally through a deep blue sky full of tiny stars, and the bottom third gathers into clouds of gold-leaf texture, teal and powder pink. The result mixes the precision of a scientific chart with the softness of a dream. As star map wall art it carries an air of old observatories and leather-bound atlases, which makes it at home in studies, libraries and dark academia interiors. The constellation patterns are decorative, not a guide to any particular night.

A Short History of Star Maps

People have mapped the stars for thousands of years. In the 2nd century CE, the Alexandrian astronomer Ptolemy catalogued 48 constellations in his Almagest, many of which are still used. In 1603 Johann Bayer published Uranometria, an influential star atlas that introduced the Greek-letter names still given to bright stars today. In the 1920s the International Astronomical Union formally recognised 88 constellations, dividing the whole sky into official regions.

How to style it

Right at home in a study, library or dark academia-style living room with deep greens, leather and brass; hang it alongside the celestial globe or zodiac wheel designs for a vintage-astronomy wall. Explore the full Celestial Wall Art collection.

Questions & answers

Does this star map show the real night sky?

Not precisely. The constellation lines are decorative, inspired by the look of antique celestial charts rather than plotted for a particular date or location, so it is best enjoyed as art rather than used for navigation.

How many constellations are there?

There are 88 officially recognised constellations, a list fixed by the International Astronomical Union in the 1920s. Together they cover the entire sky, so every point in it lies within exactly one constellation.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
