Couple in an Autumn Park — Palette Knife Art Print

About this artwork

Two people walk side by side away from us in this autumn couple art print, sharing a single red umbrella. She has long dark hair and a camel coat; he wears a purple jacket and jeans. Their reflection, umbrella and all, stretches down the wet path towards the bottom edge, so the pair appears twice.

Black park lamps with glowing lanterns line both sides of the path in a steady rhythm, growing smaller until they melt into a soft blue distance. Overhead, the trees blaze in scarlet, orange and buttery gold, and their leaves drift down across a lilac sky before settling in drifts on the grass. The palette-knife-style strokes are thick and leaf-shaped, so the whole canopy seems to flicker. Warm lamplight and cool violet shadow balance each other, giving the picture a tender, unhurried mood that rewards a second look.

Why Autumn Leaves Change Colour

Leaves are green for most of the year because of chlorophyll, which plants use to capture sunlight. As days shorten and nights cool in autumn, many deciduous trees stop making it, and the remaining chlorophyll breaks down. That reveals yellow and orange pigments called carotenoids, which were there all along. The deep reds and purples of trees such as many maples come from anthocyanins, pigments some species produce in autumn. Sunny days followed by cool nights tend to make those reds more intense.

How to style it

A natural fit for a bedroom or a cosy reading corner, especially against sage, cream or deep green walls with warm wood furniture. Hang it next to the sunset avenue for a pair of autumn walks. Explore the full Palette Knife Cityscapes collection.
