About this artwork

A vermilion torii stands in shallow water at the centre of the frame, its dark curved lintel and smaller supporting posts drawn with clean, confident lines. Its reflection stretches down through still water, broken only by gentle horizontal ripples. Behind it, misty blue mountains and a pine-covered spit of land sit low on the horizon.

The sky runs from deep indigo through sea green to a peach glow at dusk, and the water borrows those colours before fading into a wide, pale lower half. That empty foreground is part of the calm: the gate feels isolated and quiet, as if seen across a bay at the end of the day. This torii gate print works as a single strong focal point with minimal detail around it.

About the Torii

A torii is the traditional gateway to a Shinto shrine, marking the passage from everyday space into sacred ground. Many are painted vermilion, a colour associated with protection from evil. The most famous torii stands in the sea before Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima, near Hiroshima, where it appears to float at high tide. The shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Miyajima is counted among the Three Views of Japan.

How to style it

Suits living rooms, studies and meditation or yoga corners with neutral walls and natural textures. Pairs well with the pagoda or Mount Fuji designs for a sacred-landscape theme. Explore the full Japandi Wall Art collection.

Questions & answers

Does this print show a real place?

It is an imagined scene rather than a portrait of one location. The gate standing in water is inspired by the tradition of shrine gates built in the sea, best known at Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima.

Why is the torii painted red?

Vermilion is the traditional colour of many torii and is associated with warding off evil and with vitality. In this print it is also the single bright accent in an otherwise soft, muted palette.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
