About this artwork

A single towering wave rears up on the left of the frame, its deep indigo wall breaking into white, claw-like fingers of foam. Long sand-coloured boats ride the troughs below, while a smaller crest in the foreground echoes the snow-capped cone of Mount Fuji, sitting small and still on the horizon. This great wave art print is an original ITCLabStudio design, inspired by Hokusai's celebrated woodblock and reworked with a quieter, more spacious composition.

Above the water, the sky rises in a soft bokashi-style gradient from coral at the horizon through pale cream to sea green and blue at the top. A fine washi-paper grain runs across the whole surface, giving the flat planes of colour a tactile, printed feel. The result holds the drama of the original subject in balance with plenty of calm, open space.

About the Great Wave

The image that inspired this design is Under the Wave off Kanagawa, a colour woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai from the early 1830s. It belongs to his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and shows three boats dwarfed by a huge wave, with Fuji tiny in the distance. The series is noted for its use of Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become available to Japanese printmakers. Our print is an original homage, not a reproduction of Hokusai's work.

How to style it

Suits coastal, japandi and minimalist interiors, from a living room feature wall to a calm study. Pair it with the whale or rising carp designs for a water-themed gallery wall. Explore the full Japandi Wall Art collection.

Questions & answers

Is this the original Hokusai print?

No. It is an original digital design by ITCLabStudio, inspired by Hokusai's Under the Wave off Kanagawa. The composition, colours and details have been reimagined in a softer japandi style rather than copied from the historical print.

What colours are in the Great Wave print?

Deep indigo and white dominate the wave, set against a sky that shifts from coral near the horizon to cream, sea green and blue. Sand tones in the boats warm the palette, so it works with both cool and neutral rooms.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
