About this artwork
A single red-crowned crane stands in the lower right of the frame, white body upright, black tail feathers falling in a soft plume and a small red cap marking the top of its head. Tall golden reeds rise around it, their feathery heads leaning in different directions as if moved by a light breeze.
To the left, a bank of white mist rolls across the marsh, with a low line of distant reeds and thin pink clouds sitting on the horizon. Above, the sky shifts through cream and pale green to a deep blue, leaving most of the upper composition open and quiet. This crane wall art relies on restraint: one bird, one colour accent and a lot of air. It brings a sense of patience and grace to a room without demanding attention.
Cranes in Japanese Art
The red-crowned crane, or tancho, is one of the largest cranes in the world, and in Japan it lives mainly in the wetlands of eastern Hokkaido. Its red crown is a patch of bare skin rather than feathers. A traditional saying holds that the crane lives a thousand years and the tortoise ten thousand, and the bird remains a symbol of long life, fidelity and good fortune. Folding a thousand paper cranes, known as senbazuru, is a well-loved way to send a wish for recovery or peace.

Fits japandi living rooms, calm home offices and hallways, especially against warm white or greige walls. Group it with the heron or kingfisher designs for a bird-themed wall. Explore the full Japandi Wall Art collection.

Questions & answers
What does the crane symbolise in Japan?
The crane symbolises long life, good fortune and faithful partnership in Japan. It is a favourite motif on wedding kimono and New Year decorations, and it inspires the senbazuru tradition of folding a thousand paper cranes for a wish.
Is this a good gift for a wedding or anniversary?
Yes. Because the crane stands for longevity and loyalty, this print makes a meaningful wedding, anniversary or milestone birthday gift, and its gentle palette of sand, sage and blue fits most homes.
Is a frame included?
Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.
Which size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.
How is my print made and shipped?
Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
