A single fork of lightning splits a towering storm cloud and lands on the summit of a dark, rugged mountain. Branches of light flicker out from the main bolt, and the sky around it glows a smoky grey before fading to black at the edges. The ridge below is almost a silhouette, with only a little rock texture showing on its flanks.

The Idea Behind Become the Way

The quote line comes from Book 5 of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, in the wording of Gregory Hays' widely read modern translation: the impediment to action advances action, and what stands in the way becomes the way. Marcus meant that a blocked plan still leaves room to act well, through patience, adaptation or a new route. "Become the Way" turns that observation into an instruction, which is how many people use it: as a reminder to work with difficulty rather than around it.
