About this artwork
Grey smoke curls upward through a black void, and near its base small tongues of white flame flicker. Flakes of glowing ash and ember drift up and outward across the frame, scattered like sparks from something that has just been set alight.
"No Retreat" appears in small gold capitals above "Burn the Boats", set in silver across two lines, then a gold rule and the italic line "No surrender." There is no shoreline and no ship, only smoke and fire, so the story is left to the words. This burn the boats poster is for decisive moments: quitting a job to go independent, committing to a move, signing up for the race. It belongs where you need reminding that the way back has been closed on purpose.
The Idea Behind Burn the Boats
"Burn the boats" refers to commanders who destroyed their own ships so retreat was impossible. The best-documented case is Hernán Cortés, who in 1519 had his ships scuttled on the coast of Mexico; later retellings turned the scuttling into a burning. Similar stories are told of Tariq ibn Ziyad landing in Spain, though historians treat that account as legend. Today the phrase means full commitment, removing the fallback so that all your energy goes forward.

Questions & answers
Did Cortés really burn his boats?
Not exactly. In 1519 Hernán Cortés had his ships scuttled, deliberately run aground and disabled, so his men could not turn back. The dramatic version with burning came from later retellings.
What does "Burn the boats" mean today?
It means committing fully to a decision by removing the option to retreat. In business and sport, it describes going all in on a plan instead of keeping a comfortable fallback.
Is a frame included?
Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.
Which size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.
How is my print made and shipped?
