About the Northern Lights

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, appear when charged particles from the Sun are channelled by Earth's magnetic field towards the polar regions and collide with gases high in the atmosphere. Oxygen produces the common green glow and, at greater heights, red; nitrogen adds blue and purple tones. The Southern Hemisphere has its own display, the aurora australis. Auroras are seen most often in a ring around each magnetic pole, including northern Norway, Iceland, Finland, Canada and Alaska.
