About this artwork

A full moon hangs in the upper left of this lighthouse wall art, ringed by swirling strokes of violet and indigo. Below, a small harbour lies almost still. Three sailboats are moored on the left, one showing a flash of red sail, and three more rest against a stone quay on the right, their masts and rigging drawn in fine dark lines against the sky.

At the end of the pier a slender dark-red lighthouse sends two short beams of gold out to either side. A row of iron lamps runs along the quay in front of terraced houses with lit windows and chimney stacks, and each lamp drops a ribbon of orange onto the water. Through the middle of the harbour runs a long, broken column of gold, coral and pink, the brightest passage in the picture. The rest of the water is cut into thick dabs of navy, cobalt and plum.

About Harbour Lighthouses

Many harbours mark their entrance with a light at the end of a pier or breakwater, so boats returning after dark can find the gap safely. Each lighthouse shows its own pattern of flashes or colour, known as its characteristic, which lets sailors tell one light from another. The Fresnel lens, developed in France in the 1820s, made such lights visible much farther out to sea. Today most lighthouses are automated, but their lamps still guide boats into port every night.

How to style it

Its navy, violet and gold palette suits coastal, nautical and modern interiors, from a bathroom or guest room to a study with deep blue walls; a black metal frame gives it crisp edges. It sits well beside the stone bridge at night as a pair of moonlit waterside scenes. Explore the full Palette Knife Cityscapes collection.

Questions & answers

Is the harbour in this print a real place?

No. It is an imagined harbour town, not a specific port. The lighthouse, stone quay and moored sailboats are drawn from the general look of small seaside harbours, so it can stand in for any coastal memory.

Does this print suit a nautical-themed room?

Yes. Sailboats, a lighthouse and moonlit water make it a natural centrepiece for a nautical or coastal room, while the saturated violet and gold keep it from feeling like a traditional seascape. It also works well in a child's bedroom.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
