About this artwork
Terraced paddies sweep down the right side of the frame in long, curving steps, each edged with a grassy green bank and a strip of terracotta earth. The nearest terraces are flooded and freshly planted, with neat rows of young rice shoots standing in pale, mirror-like water.
On the left, a forested hill rises into soft drifting mist, with a few dark pines in silhouette. The sky glows pink at the horizon and fades upward through cream to deep blue, and the still water below reflects that light back in calm greens and creams. The repeated curves give this rice terraces print a gentle rhythm, like contour lines on a map. It feels ordered, patient and quietly hopeful, the start of a growing season.
About Japan's Rice Terraces
Terraced rice fields, called tanada, have been carved into Japan's hillsides wherever flat land is scarce. In late spring they are flooded and planted, and for a few weeks the water mirrors the sky. Rice has been grown in Japan for more than two thousand years and remains central to its food, festivals and Shinto traditions. One of the best-known terraces is Shiroyone Senmaida on the Noto Peninsula, where more than a thousand small paddies step down to the sea.

Questions & answers
Why are the rice terraces filled with water?
Rice paddies are flooded in late spring when young rice plants are transplanted. The shallow water helps the rice grow and suppresses weeds, and for a few weeks it turns each terrace into a mirror of the sky.
Is this print based on a real place?
It is an original scene inspired by the terraced rice fields found in hilly parts of Japan and wider Asia, rather than a portrait of one specific site.
Is a frame included?
Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.
Which size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.
How is my print made and shipped?
Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
