About this artwork

A long flight of worn stone steps climbs straight up a grassy slope, pulling the eye to a vermilion torii gate standing at the top against blue sky and white cloud. Cherry trees in full bloom arch in from both sides, their branches heavy with pink blossom, and sunlight breaks through the canopy at the upper right in a warm, hazy glow.

Petals are falling everywhere: drifting through the air, settling on the steps and gathering on the paved landing at the foot of the stairs. Moss and young grass soften the edges of the stonework, and a small stone lantern stands on the right beside a low wall. This cherry blossom anime print has the feel of a quiet shrine approach on a spring morning, with no one else in sight, as if the view has been kept just for you.

About Torii Gates and Sakura

A torii is a traditional Japanese gate that marks the entrance to a Shinto shrine, the point where ordinary ground gives way to sacred space. Many are a bright vermilion red, and they often stand at the top or foot of the stone stairways that lead up to hillside shrines, sometimes alongside stone lanterns. Sakura, the Japanese cherry blossom, flowers in spring and lasts only a short time, which is why it has long been linked with the beauty of passing moments. Gathering beneath the blossom with friends and family is a custom known as hanami.

How to style it

Suits bedrooms, entryways and japandi or soft pastel interiors with white, blush or sage walls. Pair it with the summer hill and sunflower designs to show the seasons turning side by side. Explore the full Anime Sky Art collection.

Questions & answers

Is the torii gate in this print a real shrine?

No. The shrine approach is an imagined scene, designed by ITCLabStudio in a Japanese animation-inspired style. It draws on the look of hillside shrines in Japan, with stone steps, a vermilion torii and a stone lantern, but does not depict a specific place.

What does a torii gate symbolise?

A torii symbolises the threshold between the everyday world and the sacred space of a Shinto shrine. Passing beneath it traditionally marks entering the shrine grounds, which gives the image a gentle sense of arrival.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
