About the Quote
The idea comes from the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor who wrote private notes to himself in Greek. In Book 5 he observes that the impediment to action advances action, and that what stands in the way becomes the way. The compact phrase "The obstacle is the way" is a modern paraphrase, popularised by Ryan Holiday's 2014 book of the same name. The point is practical: treat each setback as material to work with, not a reason to stop.

Did Marcus Aurelius actually say "The obstacle is the way"?
Not in those exact words. The phrase is a modern condensation of a passage in Book 5 of his Meditations, where he writes that what stands in the way becomes the way. Ryan Holiday's book made the short version widely known.
Is the image a photograph?
