About this artwork

A forest of granite needles crowns this Chamonix ski poster. Sharp grey spires crowd the skyline of the Mont Blanc massif, snow lodged on every ledge, while several rock faces flare in bold warm red against the white. Below them, a broad glacier pours down the valley in pale blue and white, its surface broken into ridges and crevasses that ripple like folds of cloth.

Dark navy ridges close in on the left. On the right, a small stone refuge with a snowy roof, a chimney and wooden shutters sits on a rocky outcrop above the slope. Two skiers in red jackets and navy trousers make their way down past it, one in a yellow cap and one in a dark hat, poles out and red skis angled. Streaks of golden yellow warm the snow in the lower corner, under a clear, deep blue sky. In the finished print, a cream band at the top carries Chamonix in large red geometric capitals, with France in small navy type.

About Chamonix and Mont Blanc

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is a town in the Haute-Savoie department of France, in the valley of the Arve, close to the borders with Italy and Switzerland. Above it rises Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, first climbed in 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard, an ascent often seen as the birth of modern mountaineering. The valley is lined by the Aiguilles de Chamonix, a row of sharp granite needles, and the Mer de Glace, the longest glacier in France, flows down from the massif.
