About this artwork
Still water fills the lower half of this Derwentwater scene. A wooded island sits near the centre, its rounded trees doubled perfectly in the lake, with two smaller rocky islets further out. On the near shore a weathered wooden jetty juts into the water at a slight angle, beside a lone young tree and a scatter of pale stones.
The fells rise on both sides, their slopes banded with burgundy bracken and moss green, and lower down a line of dark woodland edges the shore. The valley narrows towards distant blue hills. Overhead, heavy slate clouds part around a glowing patch of gold that spills down onto the water as a warm reflection. As Lake District wall art, it leans towards the brooding side of the Lakes: calm on the surface, with weather gathering above, and textured brushwork in the 19th-century romantic manner throughout.
About Derwentwater
Derwentwater lies just south of Keswick in the northern Lake District, in Cumbria, England. It is ringed by fells such as Catbells, with Skiddaw rising to the north, and dotted with small islands including Derwent Island and St Herbert's Island. Wooden landing stages around its shore serve the lake's passenger launches. The Lake District is a national park and, since 2017, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a landscape celebrated by the Romantic poets who lived and wrote nearby.

Which lake is shown in the print?
Derwentwater, near Keswick in the English Lake District. The design shows its typical character, small wooded islands, a wooden jetty and surrounding fells, interpreted freely under a dramatic storm sky rather than as an exact map of the shoreline.
Is the Derwentwater print dark?
It is moody but not gloomy. The lake and the gold break in the clouds keep it luminous, while burgundy slopes and slate-grey cloud give it depth, so it reads well even in a dimmer room.
Is a frame included?
