Eilean Donan Castle at Dusk — Scottish Art Print

About this artwork

This Eilean Donan castle print centres on the fortress itself: a square keep rising above lower stone ranges with stepped gables and small dark windows, all set on a grassy, rock-fringed island. A long bridge of repeated arches runs from the castle to the right-hand shore, its parapet catching the last light.

Below, the loch is almost perfectly still. Castle, bridge and sky are mirrored in it, broken only by scattered stones and floating leaves in the foreground. A wooded hill glows with burgundy and moss green on the left, while pale mountains fade into evening haze on the right. The sky moves from deep crimson cloud at the top through olive and slate to a band of molten orange near the horizon. Dense, textured brushwork gives the scene the weight and warmth of a 19th-century romantic landscape.

About Eilean Donan

Eilean Donan stands on a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet, Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh, near the village of Dornie in the western Highlands. A castle was first built here in the 13th century and later became a stronghold of the Mackenzies and their allies, the Macraes. It was destroyed during the Jacobite rising of 1719 and lay in ruins until it was rebuilt in the early 20th century, when the arched footbridge was added. It is now one of Scotland's best-known castles.

How to style it

Hang it above a console table or fireplace where its dusk light can glow against dark walls in deep green, oxblood or charcoal. It shares a mood with the Glencoe and Old Man of Storr designs. Explore the full Moody Vintage Landscapes collection.
