About this artwork
A red deer stag stands side-on in the middle of this highland stag print, head turned towards the viewer and crowned with a wide, many-pointed set of antlers. His coat is a rich russet red, darker on the legs, and he plants himself firmly on a low rise of grass and stone.
All around him the hillside is thick with heather in dusky purples and plum, laid on in short, textured strokes that almost read as fabric. Behind, rolling green hills fall away into valleys filled with white mist, dotted with dark copses of trees. The sky takes up the upper third: banks of slate-blue cloud lit gold from below, with patches of pale light where the morning breaks through. The effect recalls the Victorian taste for Highland wildlife scenes, quiet, proud and a little romantic.
About the Red Deer Stag
The red deer is the largest native land mammal in the British Isles, and the Scottish Highlands hold most of Britain's wild population. Only the males, called stags, grow antlers, which they shed and regrow every year. In autumn the rut begins: stags roar across the glens and compete for groups of hinds. The stag became a symbol of the Highlands in Victorian art, most famously in Sir Edwin Landseer's The Monarch of the Glen of 1851.

Questions & answers
What animal is shown in the print?
A red deer stag, the iconic deer of the Scottish Highlands, with a full set of branching antlers. He stands alone on a heather-covered hillside rather than in a herd, which gives the scene a calm, watchful mood.
Is the highland stag print a good gift?
Yes. It suits anyone who loves Scotland, hillwalking or wildlife, and its traditional, heritage feel makes it a fitting housewarming or retirement present for a country home, study or cabin.
Is a frame included?
Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.
Which size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.
How is my print made and shipped?
Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
