Lighthouse in the Storm — Moody Coastal Art Print

A stormy lighthouse print: a white tower with a glowing lamp stands on a rocky headland as huge waves crash below and gold light breaks through dark clouds, in a moody vintage oil-style finish for coastal rooms.

About this artwork

A tall white lighthouse stands on a dark headland on the left of this lighthouse print, its lantern lit a warm yellow and its weathered tower stained with rust. A small keeper's cottage with a red roof sits at its base, behind a thin iron railing.

The sea is in full fury. Green-grey waves roll in from the right and burst against the rocks in towering white spray, while lower ledges disappear under foam. The rocks themselves are heavy masses of brown, burgundy and olive, laid on in thick strokes. Above, the clouds churn in deep crimson, olive and navy, but just behind the tower a break opens up in glowing gold, as if the sky is answering the lamp. It is a classic image of endurance and shelter, made in the spirit of Victorian marine art.

About Lighthouses

Lighthouses have guided ships past dangerous coasts for centuries. Each one has its own pattern of flashes, known as its light characteristic, so that sailors can identify it at night, and many towers wear distinctive colours or stripes so they can be recognised by day. The Fresnel lens, developed by the French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel in the 1820s, allowed their beams to be seen much further out to sea. Most lighthouses were once tended by resident keepers, but nearly all are now automated.

How to style it

A natural fit for a bathroom, hallway or study with navy, sea-green or charcoal walls, or anywhere in a coastal home. Pair it with the Cliffs of Moher for a dramatic seascape pair. Explore the full Moody Vintage Landscapes collection.

Questions & answers

Is this a real lighthouse?

No. It is an imagined lighthouse on a rocky headland, inspired by the classic white towers of Atlantic and North Sea coasts. Because it is not tied to one place, it suits anyone who loves the sea.

What does a lighthouse symbolise?

Guidance, safety and steadfastness. A lighthouse standing firm in a storm is a long-standing image of hope and resilience, which makes this print a thoughtful gift for someone facing a challenge or starting a new chapter.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
