A narrow lane curves away from the viewer between low dry-stone walls, its wet surface strewn with red and gold leaves. On the right, a terrace of honey-coloured stone cottages steps uphill with steep roofs, dormer windows and tall chimneys, one wall hung with an old iron lantern and creeping autumn foliage. On the left, a single cottage gable is half hidden behind a tree in full crimson and amber leaf.

At the far end, more cottages gather before the land opens onto soft green hills and a misty tree line. The sky is the moodiest part of this Cotswolds print: deep olive on one side, blue-grey storm cloud on the other, with a ribbon of gold light curling between them. The stone and the fallen leaves pick up that gold, so the whole lane seems lit from within.

About the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds is a range of rolling hills in south-central England, spread across counties including Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, and protected as a designated National Landscape. Its villages are built from local oolitic limestone, which weathers to the warm honey colour seen in places such as Bibury, Castle Combe and Bourton-on-the-Water. Much of that architecture was funded by the medieval wool trade, which also paid for the area's grand 'wool churches'. Dry-stone walls still divide many of its fields.

How to style it
