Glencoe in the Mist — Scottish Highlands Art Print

About this artwork

A river leads the eye straight into this Glencoe print. It starts wide and silver among rocks in the foreground, then narrows into a bright thread that winds up the glen between slopes of ochre grass and burgundy heather. Small, wind-bent shrubs and lichen-grey boulders sit along its banks, and on the right a large rock catches a little of the evening light.

Ahead, the mountains close in. A steep, dark pyramid of a peak rises at the centre, with sharper ridges in slate blue fading behind it, and a band of low white cloud hangs across their lower slopes. The sky is heavy and olive green, split by a ragged opening of gold that lights the cloud edges. Thick, textured brushwork in the manner of 19th-century romantic landscapes gives the whole scene a weathered, timeless mood.

About Glencoe

Glencoe, or Glen Coe, is a deep valley in Lochaber in the western Scottish Highlands, shaped by glaciers out of the remains of an ancient volcano. The River Coe runs along its floor beside the A82, and its ridges include the Three Sisters, with Buachaille Etive Mòr guarding the eastern entrance. The glen is also remembered for the Massacre of Glencoe in 1692, when government soldiers killed members of the MacDonald clan. Much of it is now cared for by the National Trust for Scotland and draws walkers and climbers all year.

How to style it

Hang it above a sofa or fireplace in a room with olive, burgundy or deep green walls; dark wood and leather bring out its warmth. It pairs naturally with the Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan scenes for a Highlands trio. Explore the full Moody Vintage Landscapes collection.
