About this artwork
A huge wave curls across the frame in layered bands of navy, slate and white, its crest breaking into scattered spray. Inside the curl, a lone surfer in red rides low on a cream board. Above him, a red lighthouse with a white gallery crowns a dark rocky headland, and the sun glows directly behind its lantern, sending pale rays across a terracotta sky.
At the bottom, the town looks on: gabled houses with red roofs and balconies, a clock tower with a green spire, and a small harbour where two fishing boats rest on calm water. The contrast between wild sea and quiet quay gives the scene its tension. Beneath it all, a cream title band names Nazaré in navy serif capitals. About Nazaré
Nazaré is a traditional fishing town on Portugal's central Atlantic coast. In winter, Praia do Norte, the beach north of the headland, produces some of the largest waves ever surfed, thanks to a deep underwater canyon that funnels Atlantic swells towards the shore. Big-wave surfers from around the world gather there, while crowds watch from the red lighthouse at the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo. The town keeps its fishing heritage alive too, from colourful boats to fish drying in the sun on the beach.

Questions & answers
Why is Nazaré famous for big waves?
Because of an underwater canyon. The Nazaré Canyon runs deep towards the coast and focuses winter swells onto Praia do Norte, producing some of the biggest waves ever ridden. The poster sums up that drama in a single curling wave beneath the lighthouse.
Is this an original vintage travel poster?
No. It is a recent, original digital design by ITCLabStudio, made in the spirit of 1930s art deco travel posters. Flat shapes, soft gradients and fine paper grain give it a period feel, but the artwork itself is new.
Is a frame included?
Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.
Which size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.
