About this artwork

A row of red wooden cabins stands on stilts over the water in this Lofoten Islands print, each with white window frames, a weathered roof and a small railed deck. Rowing boats are tied up beneath them, and a tall mast rises from a boat moored further along. Across the bay, more red houses line the opposite shore.

Behind the village, a wall of jagged mountains rises sharply, their peaks dusted with snow in cold blues and whites, while mist pools along their base. The water is calm enough to mirror the cabins in long red reflections, with rocks breaking the surface near the shore. The sky is dark olive and charcoal, cracked with gold where the light catches the cloud edges. It is a quiet, northern scene with the weathered warmth of a 19th-century romantic landscape.

About Reine and the Lofoten Islands

The Lofoten Islands are an archipelago off the north-west coast of Norway, lying above the Arctic Circle. Their red wooden cabins on stilts, called rorbuer, were built to house the seasonal fishermen who came each winter for the great Lofoten cod fishery, and many are now rented to visitors. Reine, on the island of Moskenesøya, is often described as one of Norway's most beautiful villages, its cabins set against steep peaks that rise straight from the sea.

How to style it

Works in a living room, study or cabin-style space with charcoal, navy or warm white walls and natural wood. Pair it with the Geirangerfjord design for a Norwegian pair. Explore the full Moody Vintage Landscapes collection.

Questions & answers

Is this Reine in the Lofoten Islands?

It is inspired by Reine and the fishing villages of Lofoten, with their red rorbu cabins on stilts and sharp peaks behind. The layout is composed freely for mood, so it captures the spirit of the islands rather than one exact viewpoint.

Why are the cabins red?

Red is the traditional colour of Norwegian fishing cabins and farm buildings. Historically, red paint made from iron-rich earth pigments was among the cheapest to produce, and it remains the signature look of Lofoten's rorbuer.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
