About this artwork
The bridge stands at the centre like a monument: tall piers of honey-coloured stone, a great central arch over the shadowed depths of the gorge, side arches at the top and a small window above the middle. Sheer cliffs of layered rock fall away on both sides, softened by dark green trees, and the gorge floor vanishes into deep blue shade.
On the rims, white houses with red-tiled roofs, chimneys and iron balconies perch right at the edge, with a single blue house among them. Beyond the bridge, the countryside rolls away in bands of gold and green, dotted with trees, towards blue hills and a half-hidden sun. About Ronda
Ronda is a hilltop town in the province of Málaga in Andalusia, southern Spain, split in two by El Tajo, a deep gorge cut by the Guadalevín river. The Puente Nuevo, or New Bridge, completed in the late 18th century, spans the gorge to join the old Moorish quarter, La Ciudad, with the newer El Mercadillo district. White houses line the cliff edges, and the town is a natural base for exploring the white villages of the surrounding Serranía de Ronda.
