About this artwork

The Pena Palace fills the upper half of the frame like a castle from a fairy tale. A round red tower on the left carries a big blue dome with a small lantern, flanked by slender pointed turrets. At the centre, a golden dome sits above rows of arched windows, and on the right a red clock tower bristles with turrets of its own. Lower down, yellow towers and grey stone walls with crenellated battlements wrap around an arched gateway and a stone stair.

Beneath the palace, a thick forest canopy spreads across the lower half in layers of olive, moss and deep green, with broad leaves in the foreground and pale branches showing through. A cream-gold sky with soft clouds keeps the colours warm. Drawn by a studio based in Portugal, this Sintra poster is an original ITCLabStudio design in the spirit of 1930s art deco travel posters, with Sintra in navy serif capitals and Portugal under a fine terracotta rule.

About Sintra and the Pena Palace

Sintra is a hill town in the Sintra Mountains, a short trip west of Lisbon, long favoured by Portuguese royalty and praised by Lord Byron. Its best-known landmark, the Pena Palace, was built in the 19th century for King Ferdinand II on the site of an old monastery, mixing Gothic, Manueline and Moorish-inspired styles in bold reds and yellows. The palace stands in a large wooded park. The Cultural Landscape of Sintra, which also includes the Moorish Castle and Quinta da Regaleira, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Questions & answers

Is the palace in the Sintra poster the Pena Palace?

Yes. The design is a stylised take on the Pena Palace, Sintra's hilltop landmark, keeping its red and yellow walls, domes, clock tower and battlements while simplifying the details into flat art deco shapes above the surrounding forest.

Why is the Pena Palace so colourful?

It was built as a Romantic fantasy. King Ferdinand II had it designed in the 19th century as a theatrical mix of styles, and its strong reds and yellows are part of that playful character, which the poster sets against the deep green of the forest.

Is a frame included?

Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.

Which size should I choose?

As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.

How is my print made and shipped?

Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
