About this artwork
A single standing stone rises from the moor in this Dartmoor print, tall, slab-sided and blotched with pale lichen. A few smaller boulders lie at its foot in tufts of golden grass. Just beside it a lone tree leans hard to one side, its twisted trunk and thin branches carrying a crown of rust-red leaves, as if shaped by years of wind.
The foreground is a rich carpet of purple heather, laid on in dense, textured strokes. Behind, the moor rolls away in bands of burgundy and green towards a far horizon, with a low rocky outcrop on the left skyline. Clouds dominate the upper half: churning slate and charcoal shapes edged with ochre, lit from behind by a sun that never quite breaks through. It is a quiet, ancient-feeling scene in the spirit of 19th-century romantic landscape art.
About Dartmoor
Dartmoor is a national park in Devon, south-west England, covering a wide upland of open moorland, blanket bog and steep wooded valleys. Its skyline is broken by granite tors, rocky outcrops such as Haytor and Hound Tor, and the moor holds one of Britain's richest collections of prehistoric remains, including stone rows, stone circles, burial cairns and solitary standing stones, or menhirs. Hardy Dartmoor ponies graze freely across the open land, alongside sheep and cattle.

Questions & answers
Does the print show a granite tor?
Not as its main subject. The focus is a single standing stone with a wind-bent tree beside it, set on heather moorland of the kind found on Dartmoor. A low rocky outcrop on the far skyline hints at the moor's tors.
What is a standing stone?
A standing stone, or menhir, is a large upright stone set in the ground by prehistoric people. Dartmoor has many, often near stone rows and circles thought to date mostly from the late Neolithic and Bronze Age.
Is a frame included?
Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.
Which size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.
How is my print made and shipped?
