Two horses share a dewy meadow in this horse wall art. The nearer one, a deep bay with a black mane and white socks, lowers its head to graze, while the second stands a little further back with its head raised, looking calmly towards the viewer, a white blaze down its face.
A rough rail fence of weathered timber runs across the foreground, and tiny white wildflowers dot the grass. Broad oak trees frame the scene on both sides, their leaves dark against the light. Behind them, mist hangs low over the field and softens a row of distant trees, while the sun rises in a warm gold glow beneath clouds edged in burgundy and slate. The mood is gentle and timeless, close to the pastoral animal scenes that once hung in 19th-century country houses.
About Horses at Dawn
Horses are herd animals and feel safest in company, which is why they are so often kept, and pictured, in pairs. They are natural grazers that spend a large part of each day eating grass, including the cool hours around dawn. Morning mist like the one in this scene forms on still, clear nights when the ground cools and moisture condenses in the air just above it, often lying in low meadows until the sun warms it away. Pastoral horse scenes were a favourite subject of 19th-century British art.

Is the horse print set in a particular place?
No. It is an imagined pastoral meadow with oak trees, a wooden fence and dawn mist, the kind of scene found across the English and Irish countryside, so it suits any home with a love of horses or rural life.
What colour are the horses?
Both have rich red-brown coats. The grazing horse is a bay with a dark mane and tail and white socks, and the standing horse has a white blaze and white lower legs.
Is a frame included?
