Below, timber chalets with stone bases, wooden balconies and warm yellow windows nestle among the trees, their chimneys capped with snow. About Courchevel
Courchevel is a ski resort in the Savoie department of the French Alps, above the Tarentaise valley. Unlike most alpine villages, it was planned from scratch: development began in 1946 on open mountain pastures above the old village of Saint-Bon, making it one of France's first purpose-built ski resorts. Its villages were long named after their altitudes, such as Courchevel 1850, and the resort has its own mountain altiport. It forms part of one of the largest linked ski areas in the world, shared with neighbouring valleys.
