Garmisch-Partenkirchen — Vintage Ski Poster Print

About this artwork

Four skiers trace a diagonal line down a broad, sunlit slope in this Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski poster. Two in red jackets and black trousers lead from near the treeline, a third in royal blue follows, and a skier in a red suit carves across the lower left, all on red skis with tracks fanning out in pale blue shadow. Behind them, a huge rocky massif rises in white snow and brown-grey stone, an echo of the Zugspitze and the Wetterstein range, under a deep blue sky with a spiky golden sun.

Tall, dark firs stand like sentries along the slope. At the foot of the hill, a row of village houses pushes up into the frame: a white house with a red-tiled roof and brown shutters, a yellow house with a wooden balcony and arched doors, a red house with its own balcony, and smaller cream facades between. A cream border surrounds the scene, and the title band names Garmisch-Partenkirchen in red geometric capitals, with Germany in small navy type.

About Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a market town in Upper Bavaria, in southern Germany, close to the Austrian border. It was formed in 1935, when the neighbouring towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen were joined. Above it rise the Wetterstein Mountains and the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, where a high plateau below the summit holds the country's highest ski area. Many houses in the old streets are decorated with Lüftlmalerei, the painted facades typical of Bavarian alpine towns, and the composer Richard Strauss made his home here.

How to style it

Strong on a hallway or staircase wall, and at home in a chalet or a living room with warm wood and red or green accents. Pair it with the Kitzbühel and Lech designs for a set of villages from both sides of the Austrian-German border. Explore the full Vintage Ski Posters collection.
