About this artwork

A red church with two navy onion domes stands at the heart of this Lech ski poster, its gilded finials and crosses catching the light. Around it, a small village of red and cream houses with snow-loaded roofs sits along a river that curls through the valley in deep, rippling blue, its banks heaped with fresh snow and dark stones.

Skiers of all ages are out on the gentle slope in front: a woman in a red jacket and navy trousers, a child in a bright yellow coat, and more figures in red and yellow further back, all leaving long tracks in the snow. About Lech am Arlberg

Lech am Arlberg is a village in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, high in the Arlberg region in the west of the country. It takes its name from the river Lech, which rises nearby and flows north through Tyrol into Bavaria before joining the Danube. The valley was settled by Walser people in the Middle Ages and remained a quiet farming community until skiing transformed it in the 20th century. The wider Arlberg is often called a cradle of alpine skiing, where influential early ski-teaching techniques were developed.
