About this artwork
A flight of pale stone steps rises through the centre of the frame, narrowing as it climbs between houses washed in deep cobalt and cornflower blue. A few façades break the pattern in brick red and warm ochre. Above each doorway, a fan-shaped motif and gold geometric lines add a clear art deco accent, and the doors themselves are carved in black, red and navy with golden trim.
Wall lanterns hang beside the entrances, and pots in terracotta and blue line the steps, holding leafy plants and cream flowers. At the top, the lane opens onto green slopes and a grey peak of the Rif Mountains against a golden sky with soft clouds. This Chefchaouen poster is original ITCLabStudio artwork that fuses Moroccan blue with 1930s art deco travel style, finished with Chefchaouen in navy serif capitals and Morocco below.
About Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen is a mountain town in the Rif of north-west Morocco, founded in the 15th century as a small fortress. Its old medina is famous for walls, steps and doorways washed in every shade of blue, a tradition with several explanations, from the influence of Jewish families who settled there to keeping houses cool. Life centres on the Plaza Uta el-Hammam beside the red-walled kasbah, and the spring of Ras el-Ma flows just outside the old town. The town's name refers to the horn-like peaks above it.
How to style it
Cool and calm in a hallway, a bedroom or a bathroom with white walls, blue ceramics and terracotta pots. Pair it with the Óbidos design for two old-town lanes full of colour. Explore the full Vintage Travel Posters collection.

Questions & answers
Why are Chefchaouen's houses blue?
No single explanation is agreed. Common theories credit Jewish families who settled in the town, a wish to keep houses cool, or simply tradition and tourism. Whatever the origin, the blue-washed lanes are the town's signature, and they set the palette of this design.
Will the blue Chefchaouen print match other colours?
Yes. Its cobalt and cornflower blues are warmed by terracotta pots, ochre walls and a golden sky, so it sits well with white, sand, rust or navy schemes. It also balances the warmer, sunset-toned designs in the collection.
Is a frame included?
Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.
Which size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.
How is my print made and shipped?
Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
