About this artwork
A narrow canal runs straight into the distance between two rows of cottages with heavy thatched roofs and red brick chimneys. Their walls are brick red, cornflower blue and white, with blue shutters, small-paned windows and wooden doors. Brick paths follow both banks, edged with potted shrubs, a wall lantern and clusters of orange and red flowers.
Arched wooden footbridges cross the water at intervals, leading the eye down the canal. A rowing boat in blue and red is moored on the right, and weeping willows drape green fronds over the rooftops, under a soft golden sky. Everything feels hushed. This Giethoorn print is an original ITCLabStudio design shaped by the simplicity of 1930s art deco travel posters, finished with Giethoorn in navy serif capitals and Netherlands on the cream band.
About Giethoorn
Giethoorn is a village in the province of Overijssel in the north-east of the Netherlands, often called the Venice of the North. Its historic centre is largely car-free: homes stand on small islands linked by canals, footpaths and wooden bridges. The waterways were created by centuries of peat digging. Visitors explore by quiet electric whisper boats, canoes or on foot, past farmhouses with thatched reed roofs. The village borders the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, a large area of lakes, reed beds and fens.
How to style it
Cosy in a bedroom, a farmhouse kitchen or a reading nook with linen, willow green and natural wood. Its quiet canal pairs well with the lakeside calm of the Varenna design. Explore the full Vintage Travel Posters collection.

Questions & answers
Why is Giethoorn called the Venice of the North?
Because canals take the place of streets in its old centre. Homes sit on small islands joined by wooden footbridges, and boats are the classic way to get around, which is exactly the quiet waterside scene this print captures.
Are the thatched roofs typical of Giethoorn?
Yes. Many of Giethoorn's old farmhouses have steep roofs thatched with reed, which grows in the surrounding wetlands. The design softens them into rounded golden shapes, as a 1930s-style travel poster would.
Is a frame included?
Only if you choose a framed format. The Natural Wood Frame and Black Metal Frame options arrive assembled with acrylic glazing and are ready to hang. The Unframed Art Print arrives without a frame, and the Aluminium and Wood Prints need no frame at all.
Which size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 50 × 70 cm makes a statement above a sofa or bed, 30 × 40 cm suits shelves, desks and gallery walls. Our size guide shows every size to scale.
How is my print made and shipped?
Each print is made to order for you, then shipped with tracking from a production partner close to your address. You receive the tracking link by email as soon as your order leaves production.
