About this artwork
A little fox cub has curled itself into a perfect round and drifted off to sleep. Its eyes are closed in two gentle curves, its black nose is tucked down against its paws, and the long bushy tail sweeps around the front of its body, ending in a soft white tip. Dark-edged ears stand up from the top of its head, the only part of the cub that still looks alert.
The coat is laid down in fine, feathery pencil-like strokes over washes of colour: warm russet on the head and tail, a cloud of sage green across the back and a patch of dusty blue at the haunch. Around the sleeping cub there is nothing but warm off-white paper, which keeps the mood hushed. About Red Fox Cubs
The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is one of the most widespread wild carnivores in the world, found across Europe, Asia, North America and North Africa, and introduced to Australia. Its cubs, also called kits, are born in spring in an underground den known as an earth. When foxes rest in cold weather they often curl up exactly like this, wrapping the thick tail, or brush, around the body and over the nose to keep warm.

Questions & answers
Is the sleeping fox print gender neutral?
Yes. The muted russet, sage and dusty blue palette avoids traditional pink or blue nursery colours, so it suits a baby girl, a baby boy or a shared room, and it still feels at home as the child grows.
What makes the sleeping fox print feel so calm?
